Capitalism sounds like a chapter straight out of a serious economics textbook. But in reality, its side effects are starting to look like a dark comedy. The world’s top five richest people—Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Bernard Arnault, Bill Gates, and Mark Zuckerberg—together control over $800 billion. Meanwhile, the poorer half of humanity owns less than that combined.
Now imagine a small business owner in New Jersey who runs a family deli. He wakes up to see that everyone in his neighbourhood has switched to Amazon Fresh. His vegetables are rotting in the fridge. He sighs, “Maybe I should just mail these tomatoes to Bezos—he can use them for rocket fuel in SpaceX.”
Or picture a Canadian bookstore owner in Toronto. Once upon a time, people would stop by, flip through pages, chat about novels. Now, everyone listens to audiobooks on Audible. The poor shopkeeper looks at his shelves and wonders: “If no one reads printed books anymore, should I just sell these pages as firewood during winter?”
That’s how the machine of capitalism grinds: when big corporations dominate, small businesses suffocate. The IMF reported that global economic growth dropped to only 3% in 2023, one of the lowest in a decade. Inflation went up, job markets shrank. And when families can’t buy, factories stop producing, employees lose jobs, and the whole economy spirals down.
But the billionaires? Their problem is very different. They’ve stacked so much money that they’ve run out of things to spend on. Mansions? Check. Private jets? Check. Islands? Check. Their next hobby might be renting the Arctic’s glaciers or hiring clouds to make it rain over their backyard.
Economists warn that without proper wealth circulation, collapse is inevitable. When money is locked at the top, the middle class and working class can’t buy. Businesses shut down, and society starts to wobble.
One day, Elon Musk might end up calling Mark Zuckerberg at midnight—
—“Hey, man, do you have change for a hundred billion?”
—“Why?”
—“I need to grab a latte at Starbucks.”
And ordinary Americans will shake their heads and say: “Let the billionaires keep their billions. Just give us our plate of mac and cheese back.” 😅
